I don’t know about y’all, but I haven’t been able to get my hair done since the beginning of shelter-in-place and if we’re being honest – it’s looks a bit ROUGH.
After thinking about it some more, I actually have never gone this long without getting my hair “done.” So, when HairLooks reached out to me asking about my hair journey, I was excited to show the evolution and various, various styles of locks throughout the years.
You ready? Hah. I don’t know if I am, but regardless…here we go!
2012
As you can see, I was BLONDE (very blonde) and had a pretty extreme side part. Surprisingly, after looking through all of these – I realized that the length I had in 2012 is not too far off from the length I have now. What’s old comes back around, eh?
One thing about this type of blonde is the upkeep. It was a lot. But after looking through – I kind of miss it. Should I go back?
2013
I let the length grow out and if we’re being completely candid, it kind of looks like I have some semblance of a mullet. I think the summer sun kept the front pieces highly blonde and I’d also say I got an eyewear glow up with the help of Warby Parker. While I like the color here, the cut is not doing me any favors, but HEY! Hindsight is 20/20, yeah?
2014
Oh man(e). Definitely upping the blonde factor and also the frizz factor. This was a fun stage and as I was coming into my own in San Francisco, I definitely decided what I liked, what I didn’t, and the best color and look for me.
2016
And this is where it gets interesting, y’all! I got the ever-so-trendy ombré hair and it was my first foray into dark brown hair with red undertones. It was definitely a look and for a long (I mean long) time, I left it this way. I couldn’t full commit to going fully dark and I was nervous to opt for more red.
The length wasn’t doing me any favors, but I really loved this phase in my hair journey. Also, I distinctly remember this time after getting my hair done – the stylist was like “that’ll be $400, please” and I almost choked on the spa water they gave me. Not because I don’t value the color, but as a young twenty-something, that was well above my means or budget. I told HairLooks that I think it’s important to understand the range a haircut or color will cost – especially when you’re younger so you know what you’re getting into.
2018
It took two full years, but I finally gave in and did it.. I went full on dark redhead and she was a LEWK, wasn’t she? Let’s just saw it was a few years of going to different hair stylists to cover up my roots and I got something a little different every single time. Like I mentioned, I told HairLooks that I always love switching it up. For me, I’ve never found “the one” stylist to go back to every time and more often than not, my salon of choice was dictated by where I lived.
2019
2019 was the year where I feel like I came into my own when it comes to hair. I love this length and honestly, really like this brownish-red situation I had. This was also the year where I was in London for three months and went to two different salons to get a “touch up.” Needless to say, one salon was better than the other and it showed. 😂
2020
And here we are. Current day, baby! Quarantine has left me at quite the hair crossroads since I haven’t had it done since January and i’m slowly turning into a blonde/dishwater brown color, but hey. That’ll make getting my hair done when I’m safely able too much, much sweeter. ❤️
